What Makes Nuclear Power Plants Safe?

Nuclear power plants use "safety in depth." This means the plant has multiple backup safety systems. The plant also has several barriers to prevent the escape of radioactive material. These barriers are: the fuel pellets, the fuel rods that hold the pellets, the large steel pressure vessel that holds the fuel rods, and a massive reinforced concrete structure that encloses everything.
